Calcium carbonate particle size analysis

Laser diffraction offers the flexibility to deliver rapid measurements across a wide size range, using either wet or dry sample dispersion.

Calcium carbonate, produced through the extraction and processing of natural ores or by chemical precipitation, is considered to be one of the world’s most versatile industrial materials. The multi-billion dollar global market for this mineral continues to grow. Calcium carbonate fulfils a range of product-related functions such as being a calcium source, filler, extender, bulking agent, pigment, abrasive or rheology modifier, in industries that include: • Adhesives and sealants • Construction materials • Fertilizers • Food and pharmaceuticals • Glass and ceramics • Household products • Mining • Paints and surface-coatings • Paper • Plastics • Rubber and elastomers

Processing calcium carbonate

Many grades of calcium carbonate are produced, in which particle size and size distribution properties are optimized to meet different end-user requirements. Particle size and particle size distribution are therefore critical specifications that require close monitoring and control. Laser diffraction offers the flexibility to deliver rapid measurements across a wide size range, using either wet or dry sample dispersion. These capabilities have led to its widespread application in calcium carbonate processing for setting product specifications, monitoring and managing different stages of production, and ensuring final product quality.

Applying laser diffraction

The choice of sample dispersion type depends on the calcium carbonate processing method and the particle size. Dry dispersion of large amounts of sample enables reproducible measurement for coarser particle sizes. For fine grade materials, liquid dispersion offers greater control and therefore more reproducible results. Since laser diffraction produces volume-based particle size distributions, it enables the specification of a range of product parameters. For example, the D10 (10th percentile), can be used to track fine particles in the distribution and D90 (90th percentile) the coarse particles. Calcium carbonates are often specified on the percentage material in certain size ranges and laser diffraction delivers quick, convenient and reliable measurement across a wide dynamic range.
